Yoga asanas to keep cancer at bay
Yoga asanas to keep cancer at bay
(Photo: white formal dresses)

Yoga took birth thousands of years ago in India but eventually lost its charm and recognition in the ultra modern world that we live in today.

While there were period during which science of yoga could not get its due recognition, but the turnaround, though slow, is happening. In fact, for many years, the emergence of yoga as a true way of life was visible more sharply in west than in India.

Yog means union, and it is a formula that the sages and seers during ancient time gave us for the goodness of humanity. The research and development giants, who work on treatment of various illnesses like cancer, often question how yoga can cure or help in curing cancer. The answer is, yoga may not completely cure cancer, but it definitely provides endurance, purification and relaxation, needed for a speedy and complete recovery. These miraculous benefits of yoga have now been well recognized and success stories are emerging from all corners of the society.

Let us understand how Yoga helps in defeating cancer!!

The cancer patients generally go through a difficult time while dealing with regular nausea and weakness due to chemotherapy, or discomfort during and after the treatment. The list of side effects that happen due to harsh treatment is also long.

Years of researches have proven that proper medication along with a person's desire and confidence to survive can help uproot cancer. According to new findings, the chemo and radiotherapy works better on patients who have a will to survive. Famous Bollywood actress Lisa Ray is one such example, where she defeated a rare type of blood cancer through her true grit and determination- and proper medication. Cricketing superstar Yuvraj Singh is another fine example where the benefits of yoga helped him fight cancer and recover fast during post-therapy stage.

The practice of gentle yoga postures helps strengthen the muscles and joints, thus relieves anxiety, stress and fatigue. A relief from anxiety and stress, along with specific yogic exercises helps generate positive energy thus creating a balance between the mind and body. Tests and results have shown that daily practice of yoga have helped cancer patients with increased confidence, hope and ability to survive.

Yoga postures not only help in increasing the blood circulation but also provide oxygen to the cells in every part of the body. It also helps in controlling the blood pressure and heart rate.

The practice of breathing techniques like Alternate nostril breathing, Bee Breath and Meditation increases prana or the vital energy in body, which helps in bringing clarity, balance and harmony. With daily practice, the person feels rejuvenated and better prepared to go through the rigors of life as well as the illness.

Some of the gentle yoga postures that can be practiced are

Cat and Cow stretch

Come on your knees and hands. Hands perfectly straight under shoulder and thighs underneath the hips. Keep the spine straight from neck to tail bone. Tuck the toes, inhale, and lift the head up making a curve in spine. Exhale drop your head, round your back and suck your belly in. Practice 5 - 10 rounds concentrating on your breath. This sequence of cat and cow stretch makes the spinal and abdominal muscles strong and flexible and improves the circulation of blood and oxygen.

Supta Baddha Konasana

Bend your knees joining the soles of feet together and drop the knees down as much as comfortable. Lean backwards resting the elbows on floor. Flatten the back and bring your arms over the head in Namaste position. Close your eyes and breathe comfortably allowing your body to stretch This asana improves the breathing, opens the chest, and stretches inner thighs and relaxes the muscles of lower back.

Savasana

Lie down on your mat with your back straight, legs open and slightly turned outwards and palms facing upwards. Close your eyes and relax your body like a corpse. You may practice abdominal breathing keeping the transitions gentle and slow. This asana is known for total relaxation of body and mind. It controls your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature quieting your mind at the same time.

*NOTE - It is important to note that all the asanas can be modified and made easier with the help of props under the guidance of an experienced yoga trainer. Read more here: vintage formal dresses

Restaurant Review: Brewsky
Restaurant Review: Brewsky
(Photo: navy blue formal dress)

South Bengaluru has long been missing out on the microbrewery scene that has been thriving in the city for a few years now. The wait comes to an end with Brewsky raising its flag in JP Nagar.

Decor This is a multi-level place with each section making a statement of its own. The open-to-the-sky rooftop is the preferred choice for seating and offers a good vista of JP Nagar — perfect for a date night or for bonding over beer with buddies. The bar is centrally located and the brewery is enclosed within glass walls, with the brewing vats painted with hungry (and thirsty) looking caricatures. These are caricatures of asuras — mythical figures that were not so benign and had devious inclinations, which is apt for a place like this. The furniture is an interesting mix of tables with used car tyres as a base and some hand carts thrown in for good measure. Another level plays host to a variety of live acts, karaoke night, band nights and stand-up comedy shows.

Food With six styles on tap — Weissbier, Blonde, Belgian Wit, Dunkelweizen, Golden Ale and IPA — Brewsky is a welcome watering hole in this area. Our almost unanimous votes were in favour of the complex and slightly opaque Belgian Wit. Notwithstanding the foreign names, we loved the beers with the all-time desi favourite of Masala Peanuts. Our Onion Rings with wasabi mayo were a tad soggy and should have been fried at a higher temperature. Everybody seemed to love the Nachos here, so we ordered some with an extra topping of bacon, and it was a good decision. Five Spice Asian Pork and Stuffed Chicken Chillies were the other starters that stood out. From the mains, we ordered Vegetarian Lasagne, Chicken Roulade and Panko + Parmigiano crusted Chicken, which were all faultless. The Keema Mutter Masala was delicious, but the pao was a tad sweet. Perhaps that's the way other customers prefer it. We spotted some interesting-looking cocktails and ordered just one — Asura Alien Brain Shot — and it looks exactly like that. So do try it, just for the visual surprise. Innovative desserts like Madras Kaapi Mousse and Chocolate Cigars concluded our fine evening.

Plus and minus They have some good brews and equally-worthy starters. Brewsky is a value-for-money destination and there are no other options in this area, making it very popular. This also means that it can get crowded during peak hours.

Rating: Food: 3.5 , Service: 3 . Decor: 3.5

Venue: Brewsky, 55, 19th Main Road, 15th Cross, 2nd Phase, JP Nagar, Bengaluru — 560038 Meal for two: `1,500 Timings: 11.30am-11.30 pm. Open till 1 am on weekends. Read more here: formal dresses online

Ebola vaccine safe, generates immune response
Ebola vaccine safe, generates immune response
(Photo: short formal dresses)

The first trial results of Ebola vaccine at Oxford University suggest the vaccine has an acceptable safety profile and is able to generate an immune response.

"The Ebola vaccine was well tolerated. Its safety profile is pretty much as we had hoped," said professor Adrian Hill of the Jenner Institute at Oxford University who led the trial.

The results suggest that the vaccine is suitable for further testing in West Africa during the current outbreak.

The Ebola vaccine is being co-developed by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) against the Zaire strain of Ebola, which is the one circulating in West Africa.

The first doses for use in large scale trials in West Africa have been delivered to Liberia by GSK.

The vaccine uses a single Ebola virus gene in a chimpanzee adenovirus to generate an immune response.

As it does not contain infectious Ebola virus material, it cannot cause a person who is vaccinated to become infected with Ebola.

During the trial, 60 healthy volunteers were vaccinated at the Jenner Institute.

The results showed safety data and immune responses for the volunteers for 28 days after immunisation.

Two people experienced a moderate fever within 24 hours of receiving the vaccine but this passed within a day.

"People typically experienced mild symptoms that lasted for one or maybe two days, such as pain or reddening at the injection site, and occasionally people felt feverish," professor Hill explained.

The primary goal of the trial was to assess safety. However, the scientists also assessed immune responses to Ebola seen in the volunteers before and after vaccination.

Importantly, the vaccine generated immune responses against Ebola in the volunteers.

Levels of antibodies increased over a period of 28 days after vaccination and there was no significant difference in the levels seen at different doses.

Levels of T cells - cellular immunity is the other arm of the body's immune system - peaked at 14 days.

"Larger trials in West Africa are needed to tell whether immune responses are large enough to protect against Ebola infection and disease," the team added.

The Oxford University trial is one of several safety trials of the GSK/NIH vaccine candidate - in the USA, Britain, Mali and Switzerland - that have been fast-tracked in response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The Oxford University scientists have also begun testing the safety of a candidate booster vaccine against Ebola, to find out whether it could further increase the immune responses.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed over 8,000 people so far. Read more here: white cocktail dresses

"Being an entrepreneur, sometimes, it is very easy to be consumed by work and lead a boring lifestyle; but I make sure I maintain a reasonable balance between my life and work."

MANAGING WORK-LIFE BALANCE

I always remind myself that I am much more than my job and ensure I have my priorities right.Organising and planning my time are ways through which I am able to give my life and work equal attention; these eventually let me stay calm and focussed. To get away from my daily work routine, I make it a point to visit the Siddha Samadhi Yoga ashram in Katarkhadak, Pune, during the weekends to spend time with family and experience bliss in nature.Instead of two days, I take a three-day weekend break. For me, meditation is the best way to de-stress and feel relaxed and rejuvenated.I believe I owe myself at least 15 minutes of peace every day. My entire family believes the same as well. Besides my work, relationships do matter a lot as the reward is much sweeter than one can think of. I enjoy cycling in the mountains. During the monsoon, I go swimming in the river in the presence of nature.

BEING A FIT WOMAN

Fitness matters a lot to me. I make sure to stay fit mentally and physically as well. Mental fitness is more important to me. I also go to the gym and eat healthy.

ENERGY HIGH AND HAPPINESS

I always love to stay in high spirits. I believe my job, yoga, meditation, staying fit and eating right automatically make me feel fresh and happy. Doing well, and just loving what I do let me be on top of the world.I strongly believe that happiness lies within.

RISK-TAKER OR A MICRO-PLANNER?

I am a bit of both! I believe that both these go hand in hand. There are times in life where I need to take risks in order to understand the wonder of life. I am an avid planner, and so, micro-plan ning is a part and parcel of my life.

SPIRITUAL DIET

Always show gratitude. I also like to do pranayama and yoga to cleanse my body internally and for peace of mind.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Life is not a bed of roses; we are bound to face tough situations. Proper planning and effective thinking prepare me for such circumstances. I make sure to stay calm and relaxed, understand the whole scenario and take whatever necessary action needs to be taken.

MANTRA FOR BALANCE

Failure is the stepping stone to success. Enjoy what you do, and do what you enjoy. Work hard, and reap its benefits.

HANDLING FAILURE/SUCCESS

For me, success is never a destination; it is a journey where I am constantly trying to achieve more. Failure is not a bad thing, it teaches one to get ahead in life and achieve success. Every bad situation allows me to get something positive out of it. Read more here: sexy formal dresses

Vibrant khadi on Gujarat ramp
Vibrant khadi on Gujarat ramp
(Photo: orange formal dresses)

KHADI COOL: On a pleasant winter evening, Ahmedabad hosted a fashion soiree, titled From Huts to the High Street, on the heels of the Vibrant Gujarat Khadi Utsav.

This unique show was organized by the Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India to promote handspun khadi as a style statement, and was sponsored by UPL Limited. The focus of the last fashion week in Delhi was also on Indian handlooms and artisanal skills. The chief guest for this evening, which began with a light and sound show, was Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel. Set against the historic Moti Shahi Mahal, the fashion show had sequences centred on khadi by designers Anamika Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rohit Bal.

RAMP TALK: While Anamika's collection reinvented khadi with sequins and cape-like jackets paired with statement jewellery, Rajesh's structured jackets, dresses and flowy gowns were paired with snoods. Some of the pieces in Rohit's collection were designs that were also showcased at the last fashion week in Delhi, but these were redone in khadi for this show. Another highlight of the evening was when, in keeping with Rajesh's last show where his colleagues walked the ramp, the designer got local craftsmen from the Rabari community to walk for him.

FASH FRAT-ERNIZING: Showstopper Sonam Kapoor walked in creations by all three designers rolled into one, since her outfit consisted of a choli and a jacket by Anamika, a dupatta by Rajesh and a lehenga by Rohit. FDCI president Sunil Sethi said, "I've never seen this kind of camaraderie in the fashion fraternity before, where all the three designers cooperated and dressed Sonam together. In fact, many FDCI board members had also come to Ahmedabad to attend the show and support their fellow designers. Today three designers have done a show together, someday 300 designers will do one together and promote khadi." Some of the board members who attended the show were Anju Modi, Reynu Taandon and Abhishek Gupta. FDCI presented the chief minister with a khadi shawl. The garland that was offered to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's statue by the CM and FDCI was also made of khadi.

BOLLY BYTES: Another special guest for the evening was Chitrangda Singh, who, along with Sethi, presented khadi handkerchiefs to the CM. She later told us, "This was a stunning show, and the fact that it's promoting khadi is just great. It was also very heartening to see local craftspeople on the ramp." The actress was wearing an Anamika Khanna khadi suit for the evening. Sonam echoed her views, and said, "Now that these designers have presented such amazing collections in khadi and made the fabric high-end, the masses will also start to think of it as a luxury item. This is a fantastic initiative, and it was one of the most incredible shows I've ever walked for." Manganiyar vocalist Samandar Khan and his group customized their music for the show. Workout tips for busy moms
Workout tips for busy moms
(Photo: MarieAustralia formal dresses 2014)

Running behind your kids to get them to behave isn't a form of exercising! Whether you're a working or stay-athome mom, your daily schedule is bound to be jam-packed. Here are some simple fitness tips moms must follow:

Set aside time for exercising: Just like you make time to cook or attend a PTA meeting, budget time for your workout. Dedicate at least 45 minutes. To focus, exercise early in the morning, before your mom-duties begin or in the evening when the kids aren't around.

Involve your kids: Discover workout routines that involve your children. This will encourage them to be physically active and will also help you spend quality time with your child. Activities like yoga allow the participation of mothers as well as toddlers, while older kids can enjoy dance-based exercises like Zumba with their moms. Gyms have come up with 'mommy and me' classes, specifically designed to bring your kids along with you.

Turn your home into a gym: If the commute from your home to the gym takes away precious minutes of your day, work out at home, at your own convenience. Get your hands on fitness DVDs and online exercise videos, that will help you come up with a fitness routine you can follow at home, minus all the fancy gym equipment!

Eat like a mom: Because mothers are constantly multitasking, they need to include those foods in their diet that will fuel and replenish their bodies. Incorporate lean protein and complex carbohydrates and avoid excess sugar, carbonated drinks and processed or pre-packaged foods.

Daily diet chart for moms

9 am: Have three egg whites with two slices of toasted brown bread and a glass of milk without sugar

1 pm: Eat a bowl of papaya

3 pm: A bowl of sprouts

5 pm: One chapati with dal and fibrous salads

7 pm: Vegetable or chicken soup and a bowl of brown rice with raita

Consult a dietician before changing your diet. Read more here: MarieAustralia purple formal dresses

Top fitness apps Gurgaon swears by and here's why
Top fitness apps Gurgaon swears by and here's why
(Photo: www.marieaustralia.com/cheap-formal-dresses)

Health-conscious Gurgaonwallahs swear by their fitness apps and their diet and exercise regime is strictly app-monitored.

Gurgaon has been voted as the number one health-conscious city in the country in a survey which came out a few months back. Keeping this in mind, the city's obsession with health and fitness apps doesn't come as a surprise. Most fitness freaks swear by their one favourite app and say they can't do without it. The dependency on these apps doesn't just come from their easy availability in a tech-driven world. Gurgaon residents have their own reasons and they tell us why these apps are such an important part of their lives.

App love

It's not unusual to scroll through a Gurgaon resident's Facebook wall and see updates on how many calories they lost today or how many miles they ran. The fitness app scores are as frequent as Candy Crush Saga's, sometimes even surpassing those. The addiction and dependence on these apps has grown. However, the addiction is rooted in various things. Says Mihika Gupta, who recently won the Mrs Gurgaon competition, "I am 41 years old and the app has gotten me into shape."

Mihika says, "The running app has helped me run and has even helped me win the competition. I don't know if I will call it addiction, but I am surely obsessed with my app scores. I post them on Facebook all the time and my wall is filled with it."

Puja Chopra,* a PR professional, downloaded a weight loss app that 'took over her world and completely changed it.' Puja says, "Two months ago I downloaded Healthify app. Now my day starts and ends with it. When I wake up, I put my breakfast details in the app and it calculates the calories I am having at the time. If I am having biryani for lunch then it will tell me how many calories I have exceeded and what I should have in the next meal. I calculate the laps I swim and put in my weight in the app every week. I work for a restaurant that serves Italian food. I would always add a slice of pizza to my plate at lunch, but now that has changed. The app, in a way, rules my life now. Without the app, I knew what should I do and what I shouldn't, however there was no keeping track of it. It was all in the mind and now I have the numbers. For example, I thought the amount of sugar in my regular cup of tea meant nothing, but four cups in winters means around six spoons of sugar. When I put that into the app, I realised what a mistake I have been making. In my profession looking good is very important, but more important is the feel good factor which gives you confidence. My weight was making me insecure, but due to this app I'm now size M instead of a L. The app actually changed my life."

A personal trainer in your phone

If you aren't loaded and can't afford a membership to a top gym, then having a fitness app becomes a necessity. The not-so-pricey gyms come with trainers who are not-so-good, say Gurgaonwallahs. Moreover, any real gym junkie knows what a personal trainer can do for you. For those who can't afford one, there is always an app. Anshu Jindal, who works at a golf company, tells us, "The affordable gyms don't have great trainers. A majority of the gyms in Gurgaon don't have good coaches and their coaching is not personalised. The trainers have no idea how to prescribe a workout depending on your needs. I use the Fitocracy app and it has helped me make my workouts innovative. Also, with its help I get to do different workouts throughout the week. My work involves a lot of travelling and sometimes I don't have access to gym equipment to support my workout. The the app helps me with no machine workouts."

Adding to this, Ankit Sharma, who works as a sales manager with an apparel company, says, "My app works like my personal trainer which plans my workout sessions all 30 days of the month. I can't run without my app and I am addicted to it. I used to weigh 85kg and the app helped me shed a lot of weight - something no trainer or equipment has been able to do. Plus the features you get with an app - like customized playlists the moment you start your fitness regime - just makes it better."

Workout addicts also believe that the apps have changed the way gyms function. Farhan Khan, an IT sales professional, tells us, "I started working out six years ago and at that time apps didn't exist. I used to go and bug the trainer for help, but he was never able to pay full attention. The next step for any gym beginner is to ask others working out around them. This can be harmful and can set you on the wrong track. Now with these apps, nobody asks others for help. Obviously people discuss, but now we have all got our personal trainers in our phone."

Apps recommended by Gurgaonwallahs

Here are a few apps that residents of the Millennium City swear by:

- RunKeeper: Tracks your pace, measures workout distance, charts weight loss and also gives audio updates about your mileage.

- Map My Run: You can log in 600 different types of workouts. Records your GPS-based workouts.

- GymApp: Keeps track of all possible gym training. Has a good database of exercises. Lets you create individual training course and your own exercises.

- Calorie Counter - MyFitnessPal: Large food database, easy food entries and easily connects with around 50 other fitness apps.

- HealthifyMe Calorie Counter: Indian fitness tracker, counts calories of regional foods. You can feed in your target weight and the app customises a diet plan for you. Read more here: www.marieaustralia.com/short-formal-dresses

Add zing to your selfie!
Add zing to your selfie!
(Photo: www.marieaustralia.com)

Bored looking at your selfie again? Spruce it up with this new technology and you won't be disappointed.

A new algorithm developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers could transfer acclaimed photographers' signature styles to your own smart phone photos.

"Style transfer is a thriving area of graphics research but till date, standard style-transfer techniques tend not to work well with close-ups of faces," said YiChang Shih, an MIT graduate student in electrical engineering and computer science.

Instead, Shih and his colleagues at Adobe Systems and University of Virginia performed what Shih described as a "local transfer".

Using off-the-shelf face recognition software, they first identified a portrait in the desired style that had characteristics similar to those of the photo to be modified.

"We then find a dense correspondence - like eyes to eyes, beard to beard, skin to skin - and do this local transfer," Shih explained.

Human faces consist of textures of different scales.

"You want the small scale - which corresponds to face pores and hairs - to be similar, but you also want the large scale to be similar - like nose, mouth, lighting," Shih noted.

According to Shih, the technique works best when the source and target images are well matched.

When they are not, the results can be bizarre like the superimposition of wrinkles on a child's face.

The authors are set to present their findings at the premier graphics conference "Siggraph 2014" in Vancouver, Canada, in August. Read more here: www.marieaustralia.com/formal-dresses
