South Bengaluru has long been missing out on the microbrewery scene that has been thriving in the city for a few years now. The wait comes to an end with Brewsky raising its flag in JP Nagar.
Decor This is a multi-level place with each section making a statement of its own. The open-to-the-sky rooftop is the preferred choice for seating and offers a good vista of JP Nagar — perfect for a date night or for bonding over beer with buddies. The bar is centrally located and the brewery is enclosed within glass walls, with the brewing vats painted with hungry (and thirsty) looking caricatures. These are caricatures of asuras — mythical figures that were not so benign and had devious inclinations, which is apt for a place like this. The furniture is an interesting mix of tables with used car tyres as a base and some hand carts thrown in for good measure. Another level plays host to a variety of live acts, karaoke night, band nights and stand-up comedy shows.
Food With six styles on tap — Weissbier, Blonde, Belgian Wit, Dunkelweizen, Golden Ale and IPA — Brewsky is a welcome watering hole in this area. Our almost unanimous votes were in favour of the complex and slightly opaque Belgian Wit. Notwithstanding the foreign names, we loved the beers with the all-time desi favourite of Masala Peanuts. Our Onion Rings with wasabi mayo were a tad soggy and should have been fried at a higher temperature. Everybody seemed to love the Nachos here, so we ordered some with an extra topping of bacon, and it was a good decision. Five Spice Asian Pork and Stuffed Chicken Chillies were the other starters that stood out. From the mains, we ordered Vegetarian Lasagne, Chicken Roulade and Panko + Parmigiano crusted Chicken, which were all faultless. The Keema Mutter Masala was delicious, but the pao was a tad sweet. Perhaps that's the way other customers prefer it. We spotted some interesting-looking cocktails and ordered just one — Asura Alien Brain Shot — and it looks exactly like that. So do try it, just for the visual surprise. Innovative desserts like Madras Kaapi Mousse and Chocolate Cigars concluded our fine evening.
Plus and minus They have some good brews and equally-worthy starters. Brewsky is a value-for-money destination and there are no other options in this area, making it very popular. This also means that it can get crowded during peak hours.
